EXCERPT

“What is on your mind?” I asked.

Sam led me along the dirt path toward the small cabin his family offered for my use during my stay.

“I’m not sure I want to tell you. I wouldn’t want it to show up in the paper.”

“Sam, I have no ill motives. I don’t know what I did to make you distrust me so much.”

“You lied.”

I took a deep breath. “I’m sorry. Obviously, my lie hurt you more than it did your parents.”

He snorted but said nothing else.

When we arrived at the cabin, he waited for a moment. I stumbled around in the dark as I couldn’t

remember where the table was.

“Here.” He followed me into the dark.

I tripped and fell.

He stepped over me and lit the lamp on the table. Then he held out his hand to help me up.

“I’m sorry.” My face burned. I was terribly uncoordinated in the dark.

When I placed my hand in his, tingles traveled up my arm. I think something happened to him too,

because as soon as I was steady on my feet, he dropped my hand like a hot branding iron.

Series:
Colter Sons #2

Karen Baney
Publisher:
Desert Life Media
Release Date:
October 21, 2022
Genre:
Christian Historical Romance

A Shotgun Wedding, Main Character Disguise Christian Historical Cowboy Romance. Set in Prescott, Arizona Territory in 1890 – 1891.

Boisterous Boone Colter settled into his career as a surveyor when his older brother approached him to survey a route for a new railroad. When Boone hires Jack Bennett, he never expected to be forced to choose between his desire for independence and protecting Jack. Will he rise to the occasion? Can he find a way to strike a balance?

Jaclyn “Jack” Bennett spent the last six years apprenticing as an assistant surveyor under her father. When her father asks her to give up her dreams, settle down, and get married, Jaclyn disguises herself as a man and flees to Prescott, Arizona. Except she never thought through how her choice would destroy the lives of those around her. Will she find a way to reconcile broken relationships?

EXCERPT

When the train pulled away, Boone started the conversation.

“Holt, you remember that job we did for Mike?”

Holt nodded.

“And the boulder hopping?”

“If I recall, you were the only one who hopped any boulders. The rest of us took the safer, mule-friendly

route.”

Boone laughed. It was a hearty sound that bubbled up from his belly. He slapped a hand on his leg. “It

was so much fun. I really enjoyed scaling that boulder.”

“How big was it?” Dustin asked.

“Probably about forty feet tall.”

“Forty feet?” Charlie asked. “That’s insane.”

As I shifted in my seat, I swallowed hard. Seemed Boone’s tolerance for risk did not align with mine.

Boone leaned forward. “Nearly lost a fingernail on that one. Scraped it half off when my hand slipped. I

recovered. It grew back. No big deal.”

“How high were you when it happened?” I asked as my stomach clenched.

He shrugged. “About twenty-five feet.”

I blinked. A twenty-five-foot drop would do some damage to a body. Boone seemed entirely

unconcerned.

“Do you regularly climb over forty-foot boulders?” I asked under my breath.

My face warmed as he turned to face me. No problem with his hearing.

“No. I regularly scale the side of a cliff near my home to hone my skills.”

I shook my head.

“Come on, Jack. Don’t tell me you are afraid of heights?”

“Afraid of heights?” I snorted. “No. Afraid of stupidity? Yes. I prefer working with men who won’t get me

killed since I hope to settle down and have a family someday.” That last part was not true, but it

sounded like something a man might say.

He rolled his eyes. “It’s not stupidity when a man knows the capabilities and limits of his own body. God

gave me these muscles.” He flexed his biceps and wiggled his eyebrows as a grin stretched across his

face. “I have no problem putting them to good use.”

I grunted before I turned to gaze out the window. He regaled the crew with stories of other ill-advised

adventures. What had I gotten myself into?

EXCERPT

Eight million dollars later, the line that Frank and I dreamed about was finally a reality. Only one person

came to mind that I wanted to share the day with.

“Mr. Colter,” a feminine voice called my name. My heart danced at her greeting.

I turned around to face Keri Glassman before I kissed her cheek as if we were old friends. My pulse

picked up pace as I studied her appearance. Her light blue dress brought out the deep blue of her eyes,

eyes that called to me years ago. I never forgot those eyes. A matching blue hat with ivory lace topped

her long hair, which was fashioned into a knot at the base of her graceful neck.

“I see you received my invitation.” I flashed her what I hoped was a charming smile.

She smiled, and those blue eyes sparkled. “I did. Papa was a little miffed the invitation did not include

him and Mama.”

“Frank and I agreed to only one invitation per executive.”

As color dusted her cheeks, she reached up to touch her graceful neck. “Thank you for the extraordinary

opportunity.”

“It was the least I could do for the woman who saved us three hundred thousand dollars.”

Keri took my arm as I helped her onto the train. When we took our seats, she continued. “I’m surprised

you remember that.”

“Two things I remember well. Sizeable sums of money and a beautiful woman.”

“Oh? Have there been many beautiful women?” she asked.

“Just the one.”

Her gaze darted to the floor. “Then I feel truly honored to be included in the inaugural trip.”

With Every Memory

Is the Life She Can't Remember One She'd Rather Forget?

One year after her family was in a tragic car accident that killed her teenage son, Lori Mendenhall returns home with a traumatic brain injury that has stolen the last eight years of memories from her. She is shocked to find that the life she was leading before the accident is unrecognizable. Her once-loving husband, Michael, is a distant workaholic she isn't sure she can trust and her once-bubbly daughter, Avery, has spent the last year hidden away in her room.

For Avery, life stopped when she lost her twin. Now, if she wants to graduate high school, she'll have to accept help from Xander Dixon, her brother's best friend and the boy who relentlessly teased her for years. And if Lori wants to reconnect with her husband, she'll have to grapple with information her brain is trying to keep secret. With every memory that returns, she can't help but wonder if the life she can't remember is one she'd rather forget.

MY REVIEW

When Lori wakes from a tragic car accident, she can't remember the last eight years. Things start to come back but so many things don't make sense.

This story has so much to draw into. Lori is faced with some very confusing contradictions between what she does remember and what she cannot. Everything is new  and yet sometimes familiar.

The circumstances of this story bring to her family a second chance. She is able to look at her recent times as memories come back and learn things about her marriage and about herself. As secrets from the past are revealed, the family is faced with some of their toughest challenges. Even tougher than the losses that triggered this.

Janine Rosche tackles some very difficult topics and she does it well. The story is emotional and thought-provoking. It is painful in its rawness and healing in its growth. The journeys that the characters go through took me a long and held me captive. It was an emotional read that could be triggering to those that have faced similar challenges.

I would recommend this story to those that need an emotional read, to those that love a journey of healing, and those that love an honest examination.

I received an early copy from the publisher through NetGalley and this is my honest review.
